What to do When:

1. Somebody is deteriorating and you would like to prepare for the inevitable

Call GraceCare - speak to Jóvan - 082 883 5222 / 084 610 4896
Leave the rest up to him.

2. Somebody passes away at home.

Call Ambulance - they complete a form to confirm the death (ER24 - 084 124 | Provincial - 10177)
Call police - Every home death needs police clearance before the body can be removed; call nearest police station (Paarl - 021 807 4000)

3. Somebody passes away in a nursing home

Call GraceCare - speak to Jóvan - 082 883 5222 / 084 610 4896
Leave the rest up to him.

GraceCare process and expected timeline

Day 1

First call at the time of death occurs (Leaving for destination within minutes after call)

Collection of body and storage in the interim cooling facility (Immediate except where forensic examinations are done, collection happens

48 hours after autopsy)

Day 3

Obtain DHA-1663 {Notice of death certificate} from treating doctor (Within first 3 days depending on Drs' availability)

First meeting between Nearest of Kin/Representative to complete necessary documents (The same day DHA is received unless otherwise requested by family)

Day 5 & 6

Obtaining B, C, D and E forms from relevant medical practitioners and medical referee (Requested immediately, but similarly than point 3, takes 1-3 days depending on Drs' administrative availability)

Registration of Death (1-2 days after informant signs the DHA)

Transfer of the body to the Crematorium and usage of their cooling facilities (Following registration of death)

Day 7-10

Cremation (Usually 7-10 days after death)

Day 11

Delivery of ashes in wooden ash container {or other if arranged} (The day after cremation, unless family requests otherwise)
